For those of you that read the “Moultrie News”, you may have seen the Editorial today regarding a second high school. The Charleston County School District has begun holding a series of meetings to determine if the community thinks a second school is needed. The “new” Wando High School is at capacity, as the East Cooper area has grown much faster than predicted.
Seven meetings have been organized, two of which are planned for community input. This will not be “open mic” however. Members of the public that attend these meetings will be placed into groups, to work with a member of the planning committee. This committee is composed of local teachers, principals, students, Wando graduates, parents, community leaders and members of a former advisory group. These meetings will be considered as information gathering sessions. These community meetings are planned for March 6 and April 24th at Wando in the cafeteria.
The final “master plan” will contain recommendations that will be presented to the Charleston County School Board and municipal officials in the fall.
How will citizens feel about more tax dollars going to a second school? Should this school be a trade or technical school rather than being geared for kids that want to go to college? Will it polarize the community?
All of these questions and many more will be addressed, as much research is needed.
